People think it means "Well known", but it means more than that!. It means "celebrated": well known for a good reason!. The opposite of Famous is Infamous, not Obscure! I can't help thinking that the world would be a better place if more people were aware of this distinction!.
"Fittest" as in the phrase "Survival of the fittest"!. When this phrase was coined by Spencer in the 19thC, the word had a different meaning to what it has today!. It did not mean the most physically fit, it meant the best adapted to its environment: the one that "fitted" best!.
