Do not get a dog (they generally require a lot of work, it's like having a kid almost - I know, I have 2)!.
Cats are great - very independent!. I have 2 domestic short-hairs and other than food, water, daily litterbox scooping, and some ear-scratching, they require nothing more than a yearly visit to the veterinarian!.
YOu can leave them alone for a few days with adequate food, water, and an extra litter box!. And they are much more interactive than hermit crabs or fish (although fish tanks are very meditative)!.
Indoor-Outdoor cats will be more demanding and may need more health care, grooming!.
My cats are front-declawed (they came to me that way) so if your cat has claws, maintenance will increase a little (I'm not necessarily advocating declawing a cat, merely being honest)!. But with so many cats available from local shelters and humane societies, I'm sure you could find one to suit your needs!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
