When is the Earth nearest the sun?!

Question: When is the Earth nearest the sun!?
Answers:
It's nearest the sun every year when it's winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere, as the orbit is slightly elliptical!.

"Like all planets in our solar system, Earth travels around the Sun in an elliptical orbit," explains astronomy professor George Lebo, a Summer Faculty Fellow at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center!. "We make our closest approach to the Sun (147!.5 million km) in January, that's called perihelion, and we're farthest from the Sun (152!.6 million km) in July, that's aphelion!. This year, aphelion falls on Independence Day in the USA!."

The Earth is leaning, and it go around the sun!. The equator is the Middle part of the Earth!. Above that when it be summer time it be winter time below it!. When it be summer below it be winter above!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Summer

The day the north pole is nearest the Sun is called the 'summer solstice'!. (You can see this from the picture on the right)!. Looking from Earth, the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky all year!. This means it takes the most amount of time to cross the sky!. So this is the longest day of the year!. Its called the 'summer solstice' and happens around 21 June!. Astronomers call this the start of summer and after this date, days start getting shorter!.

Autumn

As we continue our journey around the Sun, the north pole moves away from the Sun!. The Sun rises lower in the sky so the days continue getting shorter!. When the Sun is at its mid-point in the sky, we reach the 'autumn equinox', around 22 September!. Day and night are both 12 hours long and its the beginning of autumn!.

Winter

The day when the north pole is furthest from the Sun is called the 'winter solstice'!. The Sun crosses the sky at its lowest point all year!. Therefore it crosses the sky in the quickest time so this is the shortest day of the year!. Winter solstice happens around 22 December and marks the start of winter!. From then on, the days start getting longer!.

Spring

The Earth continues on its path, and our north pole starts moving towards the Sun again!. The Sun moves upwards in our skies and the days continue getting longer!. Again, we reach a midpoint when day and night are both 12 hours long!. This is called the 'vernal (or spring) equinox' and happens around 21 March!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It may seem the closest during the summer since its hotter but thats because of the angle of the Earth's tilt, among other factors!.

To Tom S: The Earth is not always the same distance from the sun!. Without going into details, just look up "earth's distance to the sun" in google images and you'll see for yourself!. Its elliptical!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

January 4, 2003, our Earth made its closest approach to the Sun for the year-- an event astronomers call perihelion!. At perihelion, the Earth is about 147!.5 million km away from the Sun!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

R u all daft!?

Earth is always the same distance from the sun !.!.!. we get the seasons as a result of the tilt of the earths axis!. This means when one hemisphere is in summer and closer the sun the other hemisphere is winter and further away from the sun

THE EARTH ALWAYS STAYS A CONSTANT DISTANCE FROM THE SUN!!!!

If you lot are going to answer a question answer it rightWww@Enter-QA@Com

It would seem that the Earth is closest to the sun in summer!. But, the opposite is true!. In January, the earth is nearest the sun, while in July it’s farthest away!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I believe it is June 22 this year because it is a leap year but it is normally June 21!. This is the beginning of summer as well and also the longest day of the year!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

in winter
it's closer but the earth's tilt gives us less sunlight, thus the cold weather
Edit: people think summer cuz it's hotter but that's when it's farther away with tilt TOWARDS the sun which means more light thus the hot weather in summerWww@Enter-QA@Com

Believe it or not but its during the winter!. Earth scienece explains this well!. You could also look on the national geographic site, or look up the history channel on the web!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
