Having been a victim of Domestic Violence, I feel that I am in a unique position to comment on this subject!. Imprisonment is first and foremost a necessity!. Secondly, don't let your emotions rule the actions to follow!. This behavior only leads to further, shall we say, complications!. My ex- only (!?) took a knife to me before he was arrested!. Don't make excuses for him/her! 'Oh, he was drunk or high or whatever but he/she still loves me and I know that we will never have such troubles again!.' Don't you believe it!. I've known of too many cases where the violence has gone from a bruised eye to a slashed wrist to gunshot wounds!. You go to court, you think of yourself (and your children, if any), prosecute to the fullest extent of the law!. YOU ARE THE VICTIM! Don't back down!.
Do what you have to do to get out of an abusive relationship!. If that means grabbing the car keys in the middle of the night and driving accross to the other end of the country, do it!. I cannot stress enough that you have options, take them!. Talk with a lawyer, always have an escape plan (two are better) in

Exactly the same as anyone convicted of assault or sexual assautl against a stranger!.
I don't believe, as is the case nowadays, that the sentences should be less stringent because of the link (eight years for stabbing some random guy in the street, eighteen months for stabbing your ex wife etc), but at the same time they shouldn't be any harsher either!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

For a first offense that does not cause great harm I would suggest 6 months jail and 3 years intensive counseling to be paid for by offender!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
