It has to do with accepting cultures!. I believe mainstream is accepting the "popular" culture!. There's two other types as well but I forgot the names!.

Mainstream: usually a really popular, typical "rock" band!. It's not always rock, but that's what I think of when I hear it!. Sometimes "sell out!."
