Why is it that when someone tells you that there are over a billion stars in the universe, you believe them, but if they tell you there is wet paint somewhere, you have to touch it to make sure!?

It's like saying that believing that a "negative number" exists but in reality it doesn't!. You can touch a ball and call it "one ball"!. But how would you define negative!. You are looking at nothing so there are "zero balls"!. You take away a ball from "nothing" and then there is a negative one ball!.
