in my younger days, used to travel around the states using this method. Outside of truck stops, I would hold up a sign saying where I wanted to go and as the trucks pulled out, the ones going to that place or somewhere near it would stop and off I would go. Spent several months traveling around the USA, Canada and parts of Australia
