German, Bavarian. The "Schmidt" became "Smith" quickly I assume, after my great-great-great paternal grandparents, who undoubtedly only "sprechen zee Deutsch" arrived in Pennsylvania and settled in Ohio circa 1850-ish to buy some rich farmland there.
My mother is more vague about her background, but she claims Irish. What luck! I love deBeers!
