Well, they've moved because of tectonic movement, and them moving is called continental drift. As for them being seperated for a reason, there are two different answers you might get. One religious, they other scientific. Actually, if you look, they roughly form a puzzle, and once they were one super continent, discovered by, uh, something Wegener. He called it Pangaea.

I have two answers, pick one
1) they all used to play together as one giant super happy continent, but then africa started lowering the property values in the neighborhood and they kicked africa out. But europe was all upset, so they protested, which caused the americas to all leave in a huff....you get the picture.
2) Continental drift because of plate tectonics and stuff?
Yeah....the tectonic plates moving in different directions....otherwise we would be in Pangea where all the continents aren't divided!
Well, actually I think we were all one big continent a really long time ago, but we got separated as the many years went by.
Yes, at one point millions of years ago the continents were joined in super-continent called Pangea. The earth is made up of large plates that the continents sit on. These plates move together and apart. This is called Plate Techtonics. When the plates move together mountains are formed or earthquakes occur. Earthquakes can also occur when plates move apart or slide past each other.
Anyway, these plates moving is why the continents separated, and this is called Continental Drift.
Yep. If the continents were all together, there would be no peaceful region for anyone. We would always be fighting over who got what. Perhaps it is not reason, but fate which has decided we should not all be connected.
