Should first time drunk drivers be sent to jail?!

Question: It may be because I am young (22) but I believe that if a person is caught driving drunk but they did not cause any property damage nor caused any harm to people then they should be heavily fined, have to perform a crap load of community service and have their license temporarily suspended. I do not think that on their first offense that they should go to jail as long as nothing or nobody was injured. However, I had a discussion with another friend who thinks anybody caught driving drunk no matter what happens should have their license revoked and serve jail time. What do you guys think on the matter?

What.......1st time and you would go to jail?? I think you need a way better lawyer! But as long as they don't hurt anyone, then yes they should get a HUGE fine to teach them a lesson rather than jail....Why make our jails fuller and let murderers go early to make room for non-death/hurt related offenses.

No, It should be a fine.

i think they should have their liscence revoked and do jail time becasue they should know better,,

jail time and community service people take this charge too lightly

they should at least spend one night in jail (like normal until bail out, maybe go to gen pop to get a taste) and then get released and get fined and do probation.

i agree.

but, if you don't learn your first time. then, i have no sympathy.

The only jail time should be until they sober up and then should be a fine and community service or something like that along with drivers licence suspended

i think the first time should be a fine IF nothing happened no accidents or injuries.but the law looks at as if they get a slap on the wrist they will do it again.my husband got a dui about 5 years ago he only had one drink but was found over the legal limit and he went to jail, had major fines, lost his liscence for 6 months, and had to preform community service not to mention pay for court costs and attorney fees.im not saying what he did was right but i do think all that for one drink was a bit much.

Jail time...makes a stronger statement...they'll think harder about the other people whose lives they are jepardizing...and that it isn't just about them!

I believe strongly in having stiff penalties for drunk driving, which would include jail time and the license being revoked.

I feel that drunk driving is an incredibly selfish action. People get hurt and killed all the time by drunk drivers. But people continue to do it because they don't care if anyone else gets hurt. They only care about the alcohol. Personally, when I am going to be drinking I either do it at home, or if I go out I get a ride with someone else or take a cab.

One time I was in college and after class, some friends and I went out for drinks (the bar was within walking distance from campus). By the time everyone else was ready to go, I was feeling pretty drunk. So we all walked back to campus, and I walked to the library and played on the computer for 2 hours until I felt sober enough to drive home. There was no way I was going to get behind the wheel in my condition, because I knew I'd never forgive myself if I hurt anyone. But most people don't think. They just care about avoiding cops so they don't get arrested, but they don't care about hurting innocent people.
I think drunk drivers are very selfish, which is why I think they should be severely punished.

Edited to add: here is the website for Jacqueline Saburido, a victim of drunk driving. If hearing her sad story doesn't make someone think twice about drinking and driving, nothing will: http://www.helpjacqui.com/Intro_02.htm

Drunk driving shows a lack of judgment. One has a choice to have a d.d, take a cab, hitch a ride etc.
(In my job getting a DWI is grounds for immediate termination!)
My dads best friend was killed by a drunk driver whose first offense was a week prior to this accident.

Yes, some jail time and perhaps seeing pictures of those killed and talking to the families left behind would perhaps make drunk drivers think....

Good question.

Do the time and ******* learn that it ain't right to drive while drunk.
