It generally depends on what (or where) I'm talking about. "Carmel" is a place or a female name. "Caramel" is the candy.

Be careful with the the nut issue...It's down right dangerous to say "PEAcan" in Texas but totally acceptable in California. Texans will laugh for hours if they hear you! Mom learned this one the hard way...LOL
