What exactly is an...'or anything?'?!
Question: My partner always asks me if I want a drink..or anything? I dont want to do myself out of my brandy n coke so I have never asked for the 'or anything'!
It cant be sex as that is the 'or what' in..'D'you fancy a cuddle or what?'

A friend ask me bring him 20 Brand Cigarettes from the shops and said if they do not have that Brand bring ANYTHING,so I took him 2 pork pies lol

the "or anything" could be something to munch on
something out of the kitchen while he's up. or a bag of crisps in a pub. or loaf from the shop.
It could be anything ask him what anything is.

My partner does this.
he tails off at the end and I refuse to answer him now and I just stare at him until he speaks. It's kind of intimidating but, you know....it........you know........
when i studied english linguistics they call this 'hedging'
it means that a person is a little unsure of themself, but also confident enough to say what they want
so they think to say "i want a cuddle"
then they think oh crap im not allowed to say exactly what i want because it will sound too strong..
so they add "do you fancy" - giving you a choice and "or what" - a hedge to make their desires sound less hard edged and exact.
"Or Anything" is a figure of speech... its like... do you want this or anything... The "or anything: is basically saying... Do you want this or do you have something else in mind? or jsut simply... do you want a drink... or do you want anything at all?
