a combination of both. but even when i'm on here for fun, there are things that are educational, interesting, thought-provoking. take this particular question for example. i could probably spend a couple of minutes trying to decide exactly what it is you're looking for, in terms of an answer. i could then format my answer to reflect the level of context you have in relationship to the possible advantages and disadvantages of offering you my personal thoughts and/or beliefs at this particular time. if i truly felt that you were interested in hearing my exact thought process upon reading your question, that could potentially change the way i answer the question. taking that into account, i would then have to determine if, after i took the time and effort to offer you my best possible answer, you would take the time to read and try to understand it. that, in itself, could determine whether i

Polls and Surveys is a "safe" area to just have fun. Well, it's not really that safe -- people get turned in for "chatting" in this category a LOT -- just asking people where they live, their age, etc......and Yahoo accepts it....it's a crazy world we live in, huh?
well one shouldn't use the results for marketing research...i just do it for the points!

Yeah, there's real market research going on in here. I think the uses of this material are endless in gauging public opinion on a number of topics, especially when it comes to favorite colors and favorite songs.
sometimes it's for help, but usually just out of curiosity/boredom
Neither, I don't ask questions, I just answer in the hope that my knowledge will make someones day brighter
sometimes it's purely to waste time.
other times i'm generally interested in reading other people's opinions on a topic. i also love creativity. it's fun to post questions that i don't know how to answer myself and see what people come up with. love it.
plus, i love reading my contact answers to my questions.
