That's a little awkward. usually people go for identical pair of RAM, which results in 1gig (512Mx2), or 2gig(1gigx2) or next stop, 4gig(2gigx2 or 1gigx4)

The answer depends on what OS you're trying to run. Vista will start crying out loud at anything below 2 GB. But XP and almost all Linux distros will run pretty smoothly.
Yes 786mb is fine, couple that together with a 800mhz Pentium 3 CPU as I have on my spare PC, it will run all but Vista lightning fast. Not for gaming but for anything else still a great old beige box.
