I don't think it would make for a good movie. It is a great book because of the style of writing but when u think about it not a lot actually happens in the book. There is two or three moments of excitement but to really relate to the character you have to get inside his head and there isn't an effective way to do that without a narrator inside his head. No matter what director got a hold of it it would never live up to all the controversy and power brought out by the book.
Actually if I could make one request it would be for Salinger to release more of his writings. He has many masterpieces never released, we only have a brief view of some of his submissions to the New Yorker and The Catcher In the Rye. Franny and Zooey was great as well. What I love about most of his writings is they are like a puzzle and you can piece them altogether into the same storyline.
It's my favourite book. I'd love to see a movie, but at the same time I'd be terrified that it wouldn't come across on screen the way it does in print.
