Why is our Englishness being nibbled away?!

Question: I have objected to our supermarket's latest stupid idea to call our shopping trolleys, 'Carts'. This isn't the USA. Our valued shoppers will be looking for the horse, next.

what theyve always been called carts in the heart of the U S A

but what are you talking about with the horse thing

I agree. One must keep their Englishness and not let it be nibbled away...=D

PC do-gooders. They are responsible for most of what is wrong in Britain at the moment.

Are you off your trolley?

Couldn't resist

i do agree, it is rawther awful and those americans spell everything wrong too, tsk, we are not impressed.

Because we are being run by jocks, and people watch too much american TV.

The English language in general is deteriorating. Someone told me that Websters is contemplating on changing the word you into just plain letter u, to make it easier on people. Isn't that sad? How lazy are we getting!

does it really matter.

English isn't a fixed language, it evolves all the time. Naming objects goes with the popularity of the expression. And, let's face it. The Americans take over many expressions. I have a problem with that too. English is invading French. It bothers me, as even the French don't even recognize English words in their vocabulary anymore. French Canadians fight hard to preserve their French and I don't want to be fighting a losing battle.

if you have a problem with this why not just go back where you came from

haha lol good one, i agree lets stay with trolley :)

Well, for one, I don't blame you in the least, if it were to happen in our area, I would complain as well, this constant eroding is , and has gone, way, way over the top, and it's got to stop.

We got the idea of calling them trolleys from America. In English trolley is the moving wheel on an aerial ropeway or cable car (because it trolls, as opposed to the fixed wheel called a pulley because it pulls). We might use the word to describe the similar gadget above a trolleybus, but it's not very descriptive of a shopping basket on wheels. Cart is a word with a much better English pedigree. If you want to be really pedantic, they are perambulators - because you walk along with them.

A few points...

At least one major store is owned by WalMart in this country and they employ 'American' sales tactics, promotions and techniques - this may have been foisted upon the store.

I'm surprised that you thought to pick up on this and not the infernal text 'speak' that is used so much these days. That's a true (and dangerous) erosion of the english language (though I'm glad to see you don't use it yourself!!)

What does it matter what they're called? They still do the same job.

I like your use of the word 'nibbled'. It's the perfect word for what you are referring to.

they can nibble all they like I will not be changed lol

Haha, getting Americanized must SUCK for you guys :P

cuz the english people think it is cool to start copying the people in the usa..x
