In my opinion you as his mum know how his condition affects him on a daily basis. If you thought he might need the medication at sometime I am sure you would take him to see the doctor again and say " I got it wrong, you were right, he needs the medication". I wish you all the luck in the world and give your boy a hug from me.

You're so right honey, our children can do without drugs. I sincerely wish that no matter what in life, all will be well for you and your son.

No. People are idiots.

He's your kid. Do what you want. Let the idiots worry about their own lives.

yes... let's medicate rather than use parenting skills, that's way easier*

*note sarcasm

so, you put the health of your child in polls and survey people?

no u are his mother u know what he needs and what's in his best interest! good luck with your son!

He just needs a good mom,, and lot's of LOVE,, So , MAY LOVE BE WITH YOU

ritolin will make him worse.
i have an autistic son of 6 & i wouldn't allow ecstasy anywhere near him, he's hypo enough without that kind of help

you are right to think that way. there are lots of natural ways in helping you son.

Why refuse to trust a doctor, who has spent many years studying?

If you live with your son, you should know if he needs them or not. Your decision should be respected.

do not put your child on that, it really messes up their minds.

tell the people to back off, they have NO control over your child and until they give birth to him, they can keep their worthless opinions to themselves.

Sorry I just don't think people need to tell you how to raise your child. Speak up and be rude about it if you must.

Ritalin (AKA speed) is used for ADD because, even though it is a stimulant, it slows them down. Doesn't work well with ADD at times either.

Listen to your heart, not "people" -- you are the parent!

use your motherly instintcs hun..i didnt let the school put my son on ritalin...and hes just fine

no, not at all....i work with people who have autism e.t.c and a lot can be said for the use of attention to detail....and that does not always include medication....you know your child better than anyone else so if you think he can and will achieve his true potential without the aid of medication, then its best to follow other avenues!

Some schools get kickbacks from each child on drugs. It pays them to recommend kids get this.

If I have a question about my son's health or medication I talk to health professionals. I don't ask on P&S, as much as I like being here and the people are great, this is not the place for that sort of advice, sorry.

Not at all,you did exactly the right thing too many pill pushers parading as doctors nowadays.Autism can be best managed by Applied behavior analysis.

Doctors generally know what they are talking about, but I thought Ritalin was only used in ADHD cases.

But, ONLY a Specialist in this area with Autism in kids knows what meds. help.

Don't listen to the ppl in your life, they don't know what they're saying when they assume your Son needs Ritalin, or any other medication UNLESS they have a license to be a Dr.!
Ritalin and other drugs affect ppl differently and this kind might not be good for your Son, and as I said, the Dr. is the one who knows what and IF the boy needs medication.

Others need not "knock" medicines either because some prescription drugs help with moods and concentration, although under a Doctor's care. Follow the Dr.'s advice.

When my daughter was in grade school she was diagnosed with ADDS. The doctor put her on Ritalin.

A year later they came out with a study. It said that adults who were on Ritalin when they were children have a higher chance of becoming addicted to Cocaine when they become adults.

I hope this helps you in making decisions on weather to keep your son on it or not. I took my daughter off the moment I seen the report!

Good luck hunny & God bless you!

Autism is a very different condition from ADD, and is in a class by itself. There are many organizations that provide information. You need to contact one, in your country, that can lead you ultimately to local resources. Use a search engine, or the Yellow Pages.

Tutoring by experienced people has been shown to be successful. Hit the Autism societies or organizations in your area. And find find support from another parent --- they probably live over on the next block. Get networking now.

If drugs could cure autism, it would be cured by now.

My best to you and your son.
