How do you determine if you are going up a street or down a street?!

Guess it depends on if you're heading north or south...
i just say up, if its somewhere nice haha, dunno why?
if the street is on a hill, you go up or you go down.......duh?!
by the halfway mark, once you are passed the halfway point you are no longer going up you are going down
I guess North or South
I'm gonna say the street numbers. If you're at 200 Main and you're headed toward 500 Main, you're going up the street.
if you are going up a street ,you are going north,going down a street,you are going south
I always say down. I'm never going "up" to anywhere, always down.
If I am heading to the place I say I am going up. If I am heading back I am say I am heading down.

I think we say ‘up a street’ in the context of proximity of the place we are heading to....
