I used to buy scented candles until I discovered scented wax it has a much stronger perfume when lit and lasts for weeks even if it is lit all day.
I can't have scented candles as I have a parrot and they will kill him. We use unscented occasionally.
Thankfully that bird has gotten me out of a lot candle parties (hosting and going to). :-)
It's funny but a lot of people do not know that you don't put scented candles on your dinner table (when you are serving food), it's a big no no.

i like both scented and unscented candles i burn a lot of incense too but scented candles leave your home smelling nice and clean i would use what ones you would prefer a lot of scented candles are pretty decorative even when not burnt i use a lot of my scented candles to decorate my house it drives my hubby crazy at times as nearly every time he returns home from work i have new candles LOL
get scented candles but also keep a bag of unscented teelights for your allergy ridden guests. You may also want to get some cheap teelight holders from a dollar store to put them in if you don't have any. I've been to a ton of people's houses who I have never had problems with my allergies until they lighted the scented candle. Then I end up being all teary eyed and had to cut the evening short.
