I try to make mine the best answer every time but if mine is really far off I definitely wouldn't vote for it. If it is mine, or nothing and my answer is on the topic I would vote mine as best rather than leave it to nothing. Also if I was the only one who answered the question like it was supposed to be answered and everyone else just typed nonsense there is of course a reason to vote for my own. I don't go looking for mine a whole lot but sometimes I am watching questions to see other possible answers. In general I would let the system decide the best answers. The unfortunate part is the system is full of people going for the points and voting their nonsense answer as the best. This totally messes it up for people who actually have earned their points and don't do it for points but do it for the knowledge.

On ridiculous, fun, or sarcastic Q's I do. On serious, or seemingly serious Q's I try to look for the best one.
well i did that a few times when i had first began Y!A...but then realized it was too time consuming and the points were useless....now if points could be exchanged for money, then perhaps i would start voting for my own answers again :)
