Due to the fact gravity is a force which holds us down why can we pick up an obj!

Question: think about it :)

Answers: think about it :)

It's because gravity works on the mass of an object, so for example a person has a reasonably large mass and gravity of the earth is just enough to keep us stuck down. But we have enough strength (due to evolution) to be able to counteract gravity and lift our legs to walk, jump etc.

Gravity on say your remote control is much less since it has a smaller mass and thus distorts space/time a lot less, so it requires much less opposite force to pick it up.

Gravity on a rock on the other hand has a greater force because it's got a high mass (very dense), so it's harder to pick the rock up.

Look up Einstin's special theory of relativity and it'll explain how gravity is the distortion of space/time which is all around us. A big thing like the earth causes a lot of distortion, whereas a small thing like the remote causes a lot less extra distortion on top of what the earth generates.

That's assuming you don't get into gravitons of course...

I am thinking, and it's giving me a headache

i get held down a lot...and its nothing to do with gravity...lol!
fancy asking us to think at this hour!!

Your effort overcomes the force of gravity.

because gravity exerts its force in proportion to weight. try picking up a bus.

gravity knows we want to pick it up so it lets us....

the gravity pull is lower on objects of lower mass

Interesting??? Heres another one...at the earths core there is NO gravity???

You need hands

Windows posits an interesting but erroneous assertion. There is as much 'gravity' at the centre of the earth as anywhere else in the universe...
however, the forces acting on a person located at the centre of the earth due to the mass of the earth would cancel each other out... and the person would 'feel' weightless. This is NOT the same as saying that there is no gravity at the centre of the earth.
(and of course we are talking hypothetically here about the theoretical centre of a theoretical spherical earth having uniform density.)
lol!!

kinetic theory in short mate!

I hate tell you, Demo!! LOL

But, actually, Mad_Theorist is absolutely correct.

The fact that we can pick up, or lift an object, has nothing to do with the force of gravity and has everything to do with the mass and weight of the object one is attempting to lift. So, there!!!!

"Mr. Thinks He Knows EVERYthing" LMFAO

Btw, "Mr. Big Stuff", do you know how blood can travel back to the heart via the inferior vena cava from the lower extremities? This process has to defy gravity by other means. This is a simple question that even you should be able to answer!! LOL

*He really should start out with more simple questions such as the one I posed, don't ya think?* ;)

ETA: I think shrebee's "girls" would be a great means to conduct an experiment to show the relationship between mass and weight concerning gravitational forces!! LMAO

gravity is against me-my girls hold me down ! Lol

I'm no scientist and don't know nuthin' 'bout nuthin' when it comes to physics. Never even took the course. I just accept the fact that I don't go flying off into space because I can observe that I don't. And accept that I can't pick up heavy thing and can pick up light things because I can observe that also. So I'd say that Mad_Theorist and Lisa G are probably right.
