I believe a good author writes with a method that allows characters to be of a different body to different readers. For it to make sense or be understandable the character can't just be anything, there is a baseline and rough image, that makes the good novelist in my opinion
they are a figment of your imagination, they can be whatever you choose. The story is played out in your mind, that's the art of a good writer. (plus a few other things)
