i am very impressed when i come in contact with a non-native english speaker. at least there's effort which is contradictory to me, who is terrified to even try (Spanish -- mine is not very good, but if i try. . . who knows)

I try to be very understanding. can you imagine if you were stuck in their country and in their same position. I help them out a little and appreciate the fact that i was educated to do just that. Maybe im just like that because i want to be a teacher. i dont know. =D

so long as the foreign person is making the effort to speak the language that is fine, obviously you will get better with time.

If I can understand them I forgive the spelling. Spelling means nothing however if they can't put the words together understandibly. I think the only thing that's bothersome is when people try to speak English and then get angry at the person they're talking to because they can't understand them. I've had that happen to me a lot.

I always try to be as patient as possible. After all, I'm working on trying to learn a couple new languages as well, and would very much like to do some world traveling one day...and so, I will eventually be in the very same boat and hope others will be as patient with me!

I can forgive misspellings and incorrect usage, practice makes perfect.

if a person makes a honest try and i can understand them i am more patient but if they cant speak our language and they have made no effort to try then I'm not patient at all..

I love people who learn the English Language. That takes alot of work! I wish that I was motivated enough to learn another laguage & move to another country....someday I will do it

Well, spellings are fairly basic stuff, and during the era of computers, typing errors occur more than spelling mistakes.

Making statements, has one golden rule, "keep it simple"...

It is nice to fancy around with spectacular terms, but then even native spekers start digging their Merriam-Webster dictionaries from their pockets (or PDA's or iPhones) and seek definitions of the rarely used words...

I have learned few languages, and I think English is the best, as there is certainly lots of fairly similar meaning words from which to pick the finetuning into the expression...

But like in one other answer I commented about humor needs to be chosen based to the audience, has to say same about fancy statements... If dealing with doctors(PhD's), academics and professors, fancy terms and statements do impress them and they understand... But when talking (or writing) to military or factory workers
it must be fairly much in professional terms, even
"slang" related to that particular profession...
UK coalminers talk different way than Sandhurst Cadets
and that has to keep in mind...

But while I visit other countries, I keep the language plain and simple and understand even local accents of English... Well, naturally need to be patient... Everyone needs to be patinent... Worse are those in certain countries who dont speak any other language, but their own... (As example: If French do not speak English.., then speak German with them...)
Naturally, USA, UK, Australia and parts of Canada benefit from the fact that English is the international language, so, they can learn other languages based purely to personal curiosity...
