Buddha had a birthday party and all the animals were invited. The Rat wanted to go but thought because he was so small and the long distance involved he would probably not be able to make it. He needed help. He approached the Ox who had not heard about the party and tricked him into carrying him to the party. The Ox carried the Rat on his back across rivers and over mountains and through the fields right up to the door of Buddhas house. The Rat jumped off the Ox and told him to wait outside while he checked to make sure this was the right place he needed to go to. The Rat ran inside and was the first one to the party. For that he received a special secret gift and the symbol of the first year. The rat called to the Ox and told him to come in to the party. The Ox to his surprise upon entering received the prize of being the second year. The Ox was eternally grateful to the Rat for even though the Rat tricked him he received a prize for which without the Rat he would never have received. Best friends for life.
Rat is first with its special gift, and the Ox always follows the Rat, no matter where he goes.
