My mom grabbed whatever was near (hairbrush, ping pong paddle, etc.,). My dad used a thin, leather belt. My grandmother made me cut my own switch from the tree. Each one had its own, unique excitement.
Mom...she used to use "the board"...it was an orange tupperware cutting board with a handle on it.

My father was always the one to dispense the punishment! My mother would not do it, she was too tender hearted. I remember one time I refused to say my prayers, and I got a good spanking for that. At school, I got paddled too. You wouldn't believe what the offense was to elicit such a punishment: I was running on the athletic field during gym and I said "****". The coach heard me and I found myself at the principle's office. The word was s*h*i*t.
Definitely hurt more from my mom. she used a ping pong paddle. My dad spanked me once, and I think it hurt my heart more than it hurt my behind. I adored my dad and hated disappointing him, while disappointing my mom was an every day, inevitable part of life.
