In over their heads, diving in dire straits, and a possible sinking feeling. Being inexperienced, they would maybe feel a bit wet behind the ear.
If one has that sinking feeling they are floundering at scuba diving, they can still enjoy life about the oceans by taking up fishing, just for the halibut.
