Is it fair or legal for gas stations to charge for air to go into tires?!

Question: I pulled into the same gas station my family has used for years in my moms car because her tire was low. The guy showed me a box thing and a hose attached to it. So I stick the hose on the thing on the tire and the tire goes flatter. The guy hollers at me telling me it costs .50 cents so I pulled around to the garage and told him to kiss my behind and to put a new tire on which he done.

Why should they be allowed to charge for something that's free?

because of the maintenence for the air compressor and the air hose that you use...the air is free, the maintenence isnt. Im sure there is a BIG compressor somewhere that fills the air tank to fills your tires

so yes its fair, sorry to tell you that

it's dumb but legal

Not fair and your avatar looks like Pamela Anderson.

It would be legal if there would be a sign Air costs....

I don't think you're paying for the actual air but for the process that goes into putting it in your tires.

I hate when they charge for air. It is one of my top pet peeves..Bravo for you for telling him to kiss your behind!

Is it fair or legal to charge for electricity really!? It's a natural ressource much like oxygen! I mean...Think about it!

Because they paid a lot of money for their air compressor. Do you have a job? 50 cents?

How could it be free if they use compressor and electricity?

The machine that dispenses the air is what costs, BUT I don't use them.. I only go to stations where the air is still free.

Are they charging for the labor or for the air? I would think the air should be free, but the labor can be charged for (although it should be like 50 cents - a very small charge - it is not that much work!). In South Africa it is customary to tip the attendant when he checks the air in your tires.

yes it's fair coz it's contained air that pushes air in to the tires ran by electricity. you have to pay for those two services

maybe it's because some idiots are going around stealing the gauges off of them, but i did hear that it was illegal to charge, which makes sense because if someone is going down the road and their tire is low that could cause a horrible accident, possibly even involving the service stations friends or family BUT THEY DON'T THINK ABOUT THAT.

if you could blow it in the tire it would be free. but they offer you a service and you use that system that put the air in the tire. this is not free.

is the pump free? How about the electricity to power it? This is an exercise in the free market. If there are other sources that are close and free, then the demand for his air will be much lower and as a result he should lower his price. however, if he is the only one around, and you need air, this creates a willingness, thus some will pay 50cents for some air.

Personally I think it's crap and you did the right thing.

Why not?? Ambulance companies and some fire departments charge for oxygen.... and that's air

It's free if you buy gas there.

In many states of the U.S., state law requires that paying customers must be provided with free air compressor service. In most cases, a token provided by the attendant is used in lieu of coins if you purchase something else, like gas. Don't know what state you're in but here in California, that's the law.

Contrary to the popular believe, gas stations make about 3 CENTS per gallon of gasoline they sale. With the 3 cents, they are supposed to pay employees, utilities, credit card fees and so on...so, they try to make money on other things like beer, cigarrettes (not much profit there either) and...AIR. Gas stations, unless they have other things going on don't make ANY money.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...
