POLL: Is THEN vs THAN hard to grasp?!

Question: THEN vs THAN.

I have seen these two words frequently being misused, and I would like to know why is it hard to grasp their terms.

For example:

INCORRECT: " I like John better THEN Joe."

" I went to eat first, THAN I went home."

I am not trying to school the Yahoo! Community, but rather would like to know why THEN vs THAN is often being misused,. even by highly educated people.

Do these two words have the same pronunciation? I personally pronunce them differently because they're two totally different words. Not only do these two words get misused often, but so do THERE vs THEIR.

I honestly have never seen these two words mixed up. I have not heard anyone use them wrong either. Maybe I just have not answered the correct questions. But yes, that would make me wonder where they went to school. Or if they did!

nfd?

Oh yes....now I have seen there and their used incorrectly!

nope, i understand the differences

no. it annoys me how people use their, they're and there wrong as well as effect vs. affect.

Some ppl pronounce them the same. I know the difference but maybe some ppl get confused? Not everyone is as smart as you

Well, I understand the difference, but I do believe I pronounce them the same.

i have no idea.
i think its easy,
maybe people just dont pay too much attention to it.

i strive to ignore the stupification of america. thinking about it only makes me sick.

i deal with it every time i order a burger or god forbid call a service center.

It's not any harder than holding the shift key to make a capital letter but the majority of people on here have stopped doing that as well.

i thought it's just me
but yeah people deliberately swap the words then and than

Eg: I am smarter then you

I don't understand this as it's not so hard to spell then or than.
