We speak the same language. In the case of your examples, we don't write them the same. And some words have different uses/meanings or are more commonly used (lift:elevator, flat:apartment, brilliant:excellent, etc).
Oh, and the other example someone gave theater:theatre isn't quite correct. I believe the Queen's English uses cinema for theater. Both use theatre to refer to stage plays.

Color or Colour depends on what Country you are in. I am in America so it's color. I think realize only has one spelling, I could be wrong.
