It can be a combination of many things... Education helps, but isn't totally necessarily a key thing.

I've met tons of people who are very intelligent and on the ball, but who haven't attended or completed college. On the flip side - I've met people who have graduated college and who are not smart at all.

I think the ability to learn, common sense, and elequence (the more elequent and articulate a person is, the more intelligent they will seem) are all important.

Also, the ability to think for one self and not follow a group is very important. Too many people are afraid to be their "own person" when in a group.

because they have paper clips

a few things......and i think you hit some of them on the head

1. ability to not make silly, careless mistakes all the time
2. ability to learn quickly
3. ability to retain information
4. common sense abilities and judgement skills

I think it's someone who understands, reasons well, and have sharp mental abilities.

not acting like they know everything

You gotta know when to hold'em, and know when to fold'em...

how they spend their time

glasses...no um i think people are absorbed by their own particular interests and even the most highyl intelligent person has something to learn...its a very indeterminate thing...i might know everything about art...but you know everything about rap music..who's intelligent then??...i think it would be adroitness and dexterity of mind and thought and the ability to grasp things quickly..and to figure out new things very quickly!!

While I am a great proponent of education, education does not make you intelligent...it makes you knowledgeable. How you apply your knowledge to daily life and situations makes you intelligence. Having said that, I would love to point out that I know a lot of educated people...unfortunately with masters and PhD who are not intelligent in my book, because they talk down at people and they feel they are the world. On the contrary....what makes people intelligent should...and I underline "should"...include education...it also depends on the person's personal experience and that goes hand in hand with learning quickly. If you make a mistake once and you learn quickly from that mistake so you don't make it again, you are intelligently analytical in applying that to your life. Listening a lot rather that talking a lot...God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason....so you can learn....even from the fool who talks a lot or from the babe who babbles....we learn from them...so we don't babble like the fool and so we know how to relate even to the baby. Patience is also part of intelligence. Some of us are born with these attributes, some of us have to learn them....and some of us just have to go through the fire to learn.
