The Mayan calendar puts the end of an era in civilization at 2012. At which point, it is hypothesized that the fact the Mayans ended their calendar here either signifies that we will enter a new era a civilization in which things change drastically (whether for the better or worse is unknown) or perhaps the end of human life as we know it. There is no definite answer as to whether or not the calendar ending at 2012 is significant. Maybe the Mayans just ran out of room when creating the calendar wheel. Who knows. It is quite possible 2012 will come and go the way 2000 did, despite all the hype.

The Maya predicted that world will end in 2012. B/c right our solar system is in the far right of our milky way galaxy. That in 2012 out solar system will be in center in of the milky way.

if you were writing numbers on something eventually you would stop cuz there is no point to it.

i not really sure i think some group of people a long time ago predict all this stuff and some of it already happen but idk y people keep talking about it's like there wait for it to come.

I read somewhere that the Aztecs [I think] have predicted every solar eclipse [Not sure if it was solar eclipses] on the right day every time. And now they are predicting the world to in in 2012.

well no one is sure weather its true or not, we will just have to see. i watched it on the discovery channel and it says that this doomsday thing is happening on december 21. 2012. they say this specific day because there is this thing called the "Mayan Calendar". its this calendar that has every single month and day, just like a normal calendar, but it starts from the beginning of time and randomly stops at december 21 2012. some people say its true, some people think its not. im pretty sure this guy named nostradamous has something to do with it. if you do not know who nostradaumus is, well. he is a guy(who died a very long time ago) who predicted things happening in the future. many of his predictions came true! he predicted the 9/11 sotry and the world wars and many other things. if you would like to know more look up his name. thats what i did, lots of information. personally, i think the world will not end then. live life up to its fullesstt!

There are a couple of scientists that came out and predicted the coming of a "massive cataclysmic event", that might occur between 2012 and 2021.
They are not sure of the nature of the event. It has to do with some part of the galaxy we will pass through, that we pass through every 30 million years. They suspect it may cause the reversal of magnetic poles.
I can't say I understand it, but then it doesn't sound like THEY understand it either.
Lol--I was kind of surprised by reading all the various answers. So many different thoughts. SpacestarMP is the ONLY one who offered an accurate answer with regard to the Mayans. A couple others came close by saying "they Mayans believed..." but that is inaccurate. We don't know that they thought the world would end. That's ONE hyposhesis as to why they abruptly ended their calendar.

PS--as cool as Nostrodamus was--he had nothing to do with the Mayans. He lived hundreds of years after Mayan society crumbled--and in Europe rather than Central America.
It's not a joke that the world will end, but no one knows if it will end in 2012 for sure.
