WOW! I was NEVER allowed to use a calculator...at least...not in a MATH class! That was the whole point of the class...to learn to calculate yourself.
Now, I WAS allowed to use a calculator for Physics...but that was because we were learning physics...the math was secondary.
I think that you should go with your gut. If you believe it is better for your students to do without, then go with that. It might irritate them now, but one day they may appreciate it.

Well I think that you should let the use calculators my math teacher did but I was also doing my grade 12 provincial exam it all depends on what kind of learning styles their better at...and they still have to figure out the formulas and everything just get them to write down whatever calculations they made to complete the question...

maybe you should let them use the calculators some times

Hmm...give them all a test with some complicated addition, division, subtraction, multiplication...decimals, fractions, percents...things you can do on a calculator...if they prove they can do it the long way, then let them have em...

assuming your teaching at least algebra or above here...preferably geometry, trig, or calc if your considering using calculators

i say let them use the calculators.........

When I was in school using a calculator was considered cheating and you got detention for it.

English teachers allow the use of dictionaries and look what poor spelling and grammar the kids have today.
i don't think the use of a calculator is going to make a difference to the acumen of your students.
how about trying to make them think of the calculator only as a time saving device allowing them the use of them for massive lists of repetitive sums. Maybe set them 40 questions with a calc and tell them if they work them out properly to only go to question 10. i don't have the answer but wish you well

Get devious to achieve your aim of keeping them sharp enough to do mental arithmetic.

if yr don't yr cld fnd yr n z mutch trbl az D ENGLISH teachaz

yes let them but do not let them use it on tests
