Why do they called Minnesota, "the twin city?"?!

Question: The twin-cities are across water from each other, St. Paul and Minneapolis and they were the same size and looked alike, on both sides... thus, the name: 'Twins' as in the "Minnesota Twins" refers to the 2-cities, as one. Maybe that's your confusion? And some sports teams are named after regions ('New England Patriots) or States (Arizona Diamondbacks) and the Twin Cities team, is named after that state.. (of course, some teams are named after States they don't even PLAY in, or have HQ offices in -- like the NY Giants & Jets, that are actually New Jersey teams.. but, let's not get on a tangent).

Minnesota is a STATE, dude... no one would call a state a city.. unless your talking about say, Athens or Troy and it was 2000-3000 years ago... They call Minnesota the "Land of 10,000 Lakes". And the Los Angeles Lakers are NAMED the Lakers, because they used to play in Minnesota.. how's that for answer?

they don't call minnesota the twin city.

minnesota is a state.

St. Paul and Minneapolis--those are the twin cities.

They dont, they call minnepoilis, and st.paul the twin cities.

That would be Minneapolis and St Paul, Minnesota.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are separated by the Mississippi River. They are Twin Cities

It is Minneapolis and St. Paul, two cities IN Minnesota that they call the Twin Cities. Are you for real? :o)

I've never heard it called that. Do you mean the twin cities of

Minneapolis and St. Paul?

The Twin Cites refers to the close proximity of the 2 largest cities; St. Paul, and Minneapolis.

They don't. Minnesota is a state, not a city. It's capitol is St. Paul, which borders the even larger city, Minneapolis. It is St. Paul and Minneapolis that are referred to as the Twin Cities, even though more people live in their suburbs.

By the way, my friends who live in the Prospect Park neighborhood would object to the assertion that Minneapolis and St. Paul are divided by the Mississippi River. Minneapolis straddles the river for the most part.

I wonder who the ignorant pricks were who gave me a thumbs down?

Another example of the failure of our educational system. St. Paul and Minneapolis are twin cities, not the the state of Minnesota. Sad.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are two minnesotan cities nicknamed the twin cities.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are the twin cities.

because of its birthdate!!..

with the other twin.

they dont call it a city, its a state

Minneapolis and St. Paul are the 'Twin Cities', not Minnesota.
You must have been an exemplary geography student!

Minnesota has Minneapolis and St. Paul and the cities are right next to each other, divided by the river. So they are really similar and they call them the twin cities. The state of MN is not called the twin city though.

I thought it was the land of a 1000 lakes? as for the twin city, could be The Minnesota Twins baseball team.

Twin cities are a special case of two cities or urban centres which are born in close geographic proximity and then grow into each other over time. The term Twin Cities is used in the United States often to refer to the cities Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Minnesota is the home of the twin cities!!!

Man, when you fup duck, they never let you live it down -- do they?!

well, you already have a best answer, a very thorough one---now answer this one---Why do they call the Utah NBA team the "Jazz"? Shouldn't they call them the "Salt Lake City Nerds on Bikes"?
