a quick smack on the bottom just to startle them, especially if they are having a fit. I like to just ignore kids that are throwing tantrums. What I do with my younger daughter is take away privileges, that seems to hurt more...

Beating the kid isn't getting a baseball bat and whacking him in the head. It's usually spanking. I've seen it done and it's really not a big deal. As a consequence, most of the kids in other countries aren't such whiny spoiled brats.

No. Because the child is only imitating what others have taught.
The only possible exception would be to spank the child if they did something really dangerous and needed to have their attention alerted: running into the street or similar. (That's my wife's opinion; not mine. My rule is: NEVER HIT A CHILD!)
