80's. He was great before he started going commercial. That earlier songs were awesome.
'80s-much better songs/lyrics, many told stories. Janie's Got a Gun. Angel. 70s were too, well, "70s". 90s-Alicia Silverstone was their "it" girl-'nuff said. 00s-they've gotten away from the music and are just trying to put stuff out there to keep up or stay in people's minds as with movie soundtracks.
