You can't beat it so much as cheat it. If you make it difficult for the polygrapher to ascertain a reliable baseline or if you respond aroused (high heart rate & breath, + galvanic skin response) to all questions (control, neutral, and active) they won't be able to get a difinitive read.
I've heard of people putting thumbtacks in their shoe to achieve these things.

yes.. but you must have complete control of your emotions.. Special Forces training teaches you to beat them..
yea it doesnt actually test truths or lies...but its natural when people lie their heart rate increases and maybe the sweat...theres lots of signs...and like the first answerer...some people are trained to control their emotions
I heard the polygraph test relies on either pulse or sweat.Sometimes when you lie,your pulse rate goes up and you start sweating.I've learnt to keep calm when lying.
