Actually, it is not as "dirty" as folks think. With the exception of the bacilli, a vast group of hardy, spore-forming species that live in soil and are found just about everywhere in the environment, all the bacteria on tested money were members of the human-skin flora. Since money passes from hand to hand, it's easy to see how these skin dwellers might wind up on money, rubbing off or maybe surfing across on a skin flake.
Coagulase-negative staphylococci are the dominant group among these skin dwellers, with Staphylococcus epidermidis the most prevalent. They, and the other bacteria found on our money, are considered pretty harmless. Indeed, S. epidermidis is better than benign: it keeps its potentially toxic relative, Staphylococcus aureus, at bay. More surprising, perhaps, was what wasn't found. No S. aureus whatsoever. Since 25 percent of the population are chronic S. aureus carriers (its preferred habitat is the nose, but it gets onto fingers), one might expect to find some on money. And no unappetizing enteric bacteria, either. A nice surprise, that one. But beware, according to a recent survey of hand washing in public restrooms, the dirtiest hands in the nation are in New York.
