Why do some customers of retail establishments feel they have the right to speak!

Question: Because they have low self esteem and they think its a way to boost themselves.
Because society says that's ok.
Because of the old class systems that say people who work in shops are much lower than people who don't! (What a load of rubbish)

they think they are something else , i know the types you mean , tell them to XXXX off !

Don't know.
I am the manager of a small, independent pet shop, and I overheard a customer being rude to one of my staff on Thursday. I listened for a moment, then went through and politely told the customer that the member of staff had extensive training, which I could verify for her. She then went on saying that we were all crap, and had no training (totally incorrect, but I don't feel the need to pull out our certificates to prove anything to rude people), and, in the end, due to her attitude, I said 'I would suggest, that if you feel that way, that you are MORE than welcome to take your business elsewhere', the customer looked shocked, and said 'yes, yes, I think I will', and I said 'I'm sorry Ms. McKenzie, I wasn't ACTUALLY asking....please DON'T call again'...as I held open the door and ushered here out!!!! lol It was quite funny!
I adore my job, and will help customers in any way I can - it is what I enjoy, and what I excel in. But, I do it because I CHOOSE to....and too many customers seem to think I / we 'serve' because we HAVE to. Not in MY shop we don't...
