It would be that you appreciate and take care of something more if you had to work to earn it!
I watched many of the folks I went to High school be given a car during their senior year and by graduation they had either wreaked or had major damage. Those that had to work for their car took better care as it was a major investment.

At 3 years of age I learned that you don't pick up a medal rod that was is a burn pile. Ouch!
