i believe that the greatest of compliments can wound as a sword if dripping in sarcasm.

what was said because when people
say stuff, joking or not it always seems
to get to my head. like if they say i look
bad in a shirt and they are like:
im completely kidding! afterwards,
ill take it the wrong way and flip out.

Both

what was said

What was said. And the tone and gestures. It was a combination.

neither for me. its a state of mind. it will only insult if you let it get to you

Probably a little of both what and how they might of put it across.

I could care less

2 how it was said.

What was said is probably more painful....but the way they said it might effect it as well....

1. What was said.

You must have "thick Skin" these days...!!!

And 'bad hearing'.........!!!

neither, i think maybe the person, if a friend or someone i care about insults me then it would hurt me,but if is someone i dislike or someone i dont even know i probably wont care

how it was said

i hear the same crap over and over, just some people can say it in a way that makes it sound way worse than everyone else

i'd say both are pretty hurtful

How it was said. Some times something made be said that could be considered an insult or slur, but if among friends it may only be someone joking. I have been in card games where we have called each other names when they win a pot, but we all know it is all said jest.

Words by themselves are neutral. They don't indicate anything other than what they sound like.
It's the combination of the words and the intent of the speaker that makes them what they are.
The perception of what the intent is, is usually the inflection of the words and the particular order in which those words are said.
There are no really "dirty" words per se. They may be contrived to be dirty because of the stigma society placed on them from what they were taught was good or bad.
That is the standard that society places on some words that are "forbidden" or "no no's".
