What's the difference between a partner, a mate, and a companion?!

Question: A partner is someone that you intend a long-term relationship with but a mate (or spouse) is a legally recognized relationship where you have to fit the legal requiremetns.

A companion is just someone you hang around and possibly sleep with but there's no implication it's long-term.
