How many out there approve of giving a 5 year old a gun?!

Question: Sounds like an insane question doesn't it but these people did just that. Saw it on the news last night but did not catch the location - some southern place I think as the grandfather had a southern twang. His 5 year old grandson shot and killed a 400 pound bear. Here was this little tike bouncing up and down on this dead bear rug so proud of himself.

Not sure if he actually killed it himself or someone had to finish it off. His grandfather was so proud because the kid's great great great grandfather was Davy Crockett. Sorry, but this isn't the frontier now.

As far as I'm concerned, this little kid should be playing with cars, trucks and playing with a dog - wait- they propbably shot it for practice. I find this absolutley ridiculous what with all the shootings today. Your opinion?

Scary! 5 year olds with guns and people that promote that (parents, grandparents) I am with you. Play with cars, trucks, dolls whatever. Guns are weapons not toys and when you shoot something it is usually dead! How in the world does a 5 year old understand that one????

I saw that too. At least the bear is dead and the local authorities know about the five year old's antics.

only if the kid is the child of George Bush. We could only hope for the best.

Great shot kid. what a kill. I'm proud of you. stop whining about this boy, at least he's hunting animals, not shooting people like adults do.

that's messed up giving a 5 yr. old a gun. what were the parents thinking. that's how all these killings start.

NO report it....guns are dangerous loaded or not

with proper training and supervision it should be OK

wow, thats crazy. this will probably give birth to violent behavior

If the child is properly supervised as to the right and wrong ways to use a gun, I dont see a problem with it.

However, close supervision and instruction is important in order to allow the child to respect the power he holds in his hands.

If everyone in the US were taught this from a young age, there would be a lot less violence with respect to firearms.

How many gang-bangers do you think had experience and proper training with firearms at that young of an age? None I would be willing to bet. They just sole a gun off their older brother at 13 and took it to school.

Makes me feel sick. Nobody should have a gun, especially not a small child. People seem to think it's OK that he killed a bear but I don't think it is at all. His grandfather or parents or whoever is responsible for giving him the gun should go to prison and nobody in the family should be allowed a gun. How can Americans think it's OK for people to own guns? I just don't get it.

Don`t put down traditions you so obviously do not understand.

And be aware that folks "twang" in other parts of the country ,too. (Michigan comes in real strong)

Sorry.... You have to BE SO.... POLITICALLY.... INCORRECT!

Kids Should be TAUGHT.... Gun Safety..... AT 5-Years of AGE!

IF THEY WERE..... There would NOT BE..... "The Imitation"... of KILLING on Video GAMES..... and the LIKE!

KIDS..... Would FIRST.... KNOW.... How Dangerous.... GUNS CAN BE.... In the hands of.... THE ....."IGNORANT!"

Thanks for Asking....! Signed... A Gun Owner! RR

Really depends on what sort of information he absorbs. If he is exposed to a bunch of movies and video games before he has an understanding that guns are actually capable of killing someone, or even has a grasp on the fact that things can die, that I would say it is quite a bad decision. Kids don't grasp death until much older than 5 years old. I am not saying that tv and movies causes violence, but in the case of a child with a shotgun it surely could. The only silver lining to that story is that if his parents are that stupid, they will have to be the ones dealing with the aftermath.

I never quite believe articles about such young hunters. My daughters (12 & 13) both hunt. They have been using firearms since they were about 5...the thing is, kids that are trained in the proper use of firearms are LESS likely to misuse them. They are taught that guns are NOT toys and not part of a "game"....I'd continue on this, but by your comment about shooting the dog for practice, I can see that you are very unlikely to ever see what Hunting is about.

I am not sure about how i feel either about the age of this child. But I am from the South, went to the southern redneck/preppy(half and half) high school and in our town all the country boys all go out in the woods shooting deer, raccoons, squirrels, and etc. They are good boys, family oriented, the politest men around here. So far in this town there are more crime done by the spoiled kids that live in big houses and drive nice cars.....

But back to the original question I believe a five year old should be shooting BB guns with supervision only.

no I'm totally aginst it
