I'm not really sure, all will be explained in the yahoo help thingy. The thumbs probably count towards a reputation of sorts, stars are just there if you want to keep track of a question, or to show others its a good one etc.
I'm not sure about losing points when you get a thumbs-down but I know you will get 1 point per thumbs-up you get. No idea about getting stars and points. Whatever level you are, whatever number of stars you get to star in different questions.

Nope I dont think there is connection to the score..stars? Well i just know that you get the number of stars in the ranking of Best Answer category........either you were thorough and informative or just decent enough to eb understood...........Ok?
