I know a guy who did and got away with it, almost fool proof.
Did it with lit cigarette, a very dry Christmas tree and then went to the store, upon his return the fire department was there putting out the last of the flames.
He was gone for two hours all in all.
The fire department blamed it on the tree.
Insurance rebuilt his house, paid him $60 k for the loss of contents, he then sold the house, bought a sailboat and is now traveling the world.
Do I approve? No, but I sure as hell am not going to squeal on him. Besides, the statute of limitations has run out.
