Stringing popcorn was popular in the early 20th century (and probably before that) in the U.S., along with cut-out paper dolls. These things were especially popular with the poor people. My aunt would use wire cutters to cut cans in strips and twist them into curls to make icicles for the tree. I know this sounds silly for a lot of you but we didn't have a lot of choices. At least, we enjoyed it - too poor to know any better.

I think they quit doing that in the late 19th century here in America.
