I think its mainly because they care but probably a little bit of routine also. I know I wouldn't bother sending someone a card that I didn't really care about.
I think most of us send them as a routine but when you receive my Christmas card , it will be really sweet and it will mean that i care for you ...

Probably routine but it is still nice to send and receive a card.
