Cause their close minded. I've had a male best friend since I was 8 and it's never been romantic. I love him to death & we're both on the same page about our friendship. People don't believe me either, and I'm only 17.
Because people expect the worst out of everything. Well, most people at least. I wouldn't.

I'm not raising mine....my closest friend from eighth grade 'til halfway through senior year was female (then her family moved away). And except for one glorious incident involving a dancing lesson, it was absolutely platonic (oh, grow up....it only involved some very intense kissing....I was only 15 and she 16 at the time).
I've never had problems striking up friendships with women. I have a gf now, but we were just very good friends for a long time before things just took off a few months ago...go figure.
Being able to be good friends with members of the opposite sex is a very cool thing....let's face it....we all need as many friends as we can get.
