Why do New Yorkers standing in line say that they're standing "on line&!

That's one of my pet peeves!

Because if you draw an imaginary line on the ground that everyone is supposed to stand on, then you are standing "on line."

i dont know. everyone is different.

They probably were saying "in line," but their indecipherable accents led you to hear differently.
