Im so glad you asked this question. I recently wrote an essay on manners in todays society and how fake and scripted people are. When someone asks "How are you" it is just a cue for you to respond with a pre-selected answer. They dont care when they ask, its all a big game. Who can say the fakest things, who has the biggest smile, and who can give the corniest greetings. I try not to play the game. Frankly, it makes me sick. I dig sincerity. thanks for bringing this up.

i'm the same way you are, i don't ask if i really don't wanna know. Its usually a general honest interest

I wish they'd tell how they really are.

Its just something I say to be nice.

i think its just a good way tostart a conversation,
regardless if i care or not!

xx

I only ask if I care otherwise I won't bother asking.

When someone asks me "How are you?" I say "Thanks for asking, I'm great"

i really want to know how they are doing and if there is anything i can do for them. good luck.

It depends on who it is, I have to say this about a bajillion times a day...

When i call my friends, I truly mean it.

When I'm at work, I could care less!

i don't like it when people say that ... because even if people don't feel good they just automatically say fine !

I only ask if I care. I hate it when people I barely know ask me that. I usually give them a long detailed answer and make them sorry for asking.

something to say

Something just to say...honestly

i do it just to start a conversation :P how r u? ha!

I really don't give a rats as s how they are and my smile is fake too.

keepin it real

How ya doin? :)

I only ask people that I am truly interested in!!!

Why ask if you don't care!!!??

No, I dont really care, Its just small talk really.

When I ask that question, I clasp the person's hands and stare deeply into their eyes, and I don't let go for about twenty minutes.

i actually care. why waste my breath

Well - sometimes it is just a formality - I mean when i ask it, I don't expect them to say "well, things are really complicated - I'm thinking about breaking up and I'm feeling really miserable, and dammit those gas prices, aaah I'm feeling so pissed off and stuff"

So I think most of us are used to just saying the same thing when someone says "how are you."

lol! It is usally just the start of a convo! I say it all the time just to get my words out!
?maddie

It's just something I say to be nice, unless I know them well and really care - then I might listen if I'm not too busy with other things.

I guess most of the time I ask to be polite, and if they really have something to tell me I listen..but that rarely happens. Usually when you ask someone how they are doing they never really tell you how they are really doing...

we have all interest

If I ask some one "how are you"? I am sincere and truly want to know.

I ask but really don;t care unless it is someone close to me

That's nice of you, unfortunately most people say it just to speak, most don't even listen to the answer.

Same here--I ask because I really care and then I listen for the response. Exactly the same with me in that if I don't want to know, I don't ask. You see, I'm that person people feel comfortable with, so complete strangers tend to unload on me. Most of the time, I don't mind, in fact, it's a huge compliment, but sometimes, well, you're just tired, right?

it depends wat sort of person they are, if they are caring like you they genuinly care but if they are sarcastic, moody, grumpy if they bother 2 ask it at all its not genuine.

It's just a formality for me, even while speaking three languages; although in Germany the equivalent of 'How are you?' (Wie geht's?) is not considered just a formality; people actually want to hear and will tell you how they are!

I have an interest and when someone asks me I always throw them off by asking..."do you want the truth or a nice lie"
most people ask me to repeat my answer because they were not listening
