A true friend is a friend forever, a real friend, friends till the end, someone who also cares about your safety and well-being, someone in your "inner circle" of friends.
Most people, it seems, are more like acquaintances to each other, or "fair weather" friends. They know each other, but wouldn't go out of their way to protect or help each other.
